Maggie Gallagher: The Magic Behind Our Line Dance Holidays

There are some people who teach you how to dance, and then there are those who make you fall in love with dancing all over again. For us at Club Dance Holidays, Maggie Gallagher is very much in the second category.
Over the years, we have had the enormous pleasure of sharing countless Line Dance Holidays with Maggie, and time and time again we have seen first-hand why she is such a special part of the international line-dance community. She brings together something that is not always easy to achieve: exceptional teaching, outstanding choreography, infectious enthusiasm and, perhaps most importantly, a genuine ability to make everyone feel welcome on the dance floor.
Whether you are an experienced line dancer who has been dancing for years or someone taking their first steps into the world of line dancing, a holiday with Maggie is about so much more than learning routines. It is about music, laughter, friendship, confidence, sunshine, social dancing and creating memories that stay with you long after the suitcases have been unpacked.
A career built around dance
Maggie's career in dance stretches back many years and encompasses a fascinating range of styles. Before becoming one of the best-known names in line dancing, she was involved in tap, ballet, modern and Irish dancing. Her Irish dancing career even saw her tour alongside Colin Dunne and Jean Butler, both of whom would later become famous through Riverdance.
That broad dance background is one of the things that makes Maggie such an engaging teacher. She understands movement, rhythm and musicality, but she also understands how to communicate those things to people with very different levels of experience.
Maggie's international career in line dancing has taken her all over the world. She has taught at workshops and major events across Europe, as well as in countries including the United States, Japan, Singapore and Australia. She was also invited to teach at the World Line Dancing Championships in Texas in 1999 and the Tarheel Festival in the USA in 2000.
It is a remarkable career — but spend a week with Maggie and you quickly realise that she is not someone who rests on past achievements. She continues to choreograph, teach and travel, producing new dances for today's dancers while retaining the enthusiasm that has made her such a favourite for so many years.
Her current website features a steady stream of new choreography, with dances ranging from beginner through to intermediate level.

So, what is it that makes Maggie such a wonderful teacher?
Perhaps the easiest answer is that she genuinely loves what she does.

For many line dancers, Maggie's name is already familiar from the dances they have enjoyed over the years.
She has created a huge catalogue of choreography, with hundreds of dances covering a wide range of levels. Current line-dance databases list hundreds of Maggie's choreographies, including both solo and collaborative work with other leading choreographers.
Some of her best-known dances have become firm favourites at socials around the world. Her choreography has also earned numerous industry accolades over the years, including Crystal Boot Awards for achievements such as Choreographer of the Year, Instructor of the Year and Dance of the Year. She was voted Female Linedance Personality of the Year by readers of Linedancer Magazine in 1999, 2000 and 2001, and was inducted into the Crystal Boot Awards Hall of Fame in 2005.
But statistics and awards only tell part of the story.
What matters to us — and to the dancers who return to our holidays year after year — is what happens when that choreography comes alive in a room full of people.
There is something incredibly satisfying about learning a new Maggie dance during a sunny afternoon workshop and then hearing the music played that evening at the social. Suddenly the steps you were concentrating on earlier become part of the soundtrack to your holiday.
